Chapter Ten

“HOW ARE YOU FEELING?” the doc asked as he read the X-ray.

“Nearly normal.” Jeff couldn’t wait to be rid of the boot.

The doc flipped off the light behind the picture. “Good. You can ditch the boot. Your ankle might feel weak for a bit since the boot was taking some of the weight. No marathons or being on your feet all day. Walks are good. Build your strength up and regain muscle tone there.”

“Thanks.” Jeff nodded.

The doc felt along Jeff’s ribs. “Pain?”

“No, I think that’s all fine but it lingered for a while.” Jeff took a deep breath without a twinge.

“Good. No infection in your forehead. Let’s check this.” The doc looked at his other wound. The scabs were gone but the pink skin stood out in contrast. “Clear here, too. You know, a good tattoo artist can hide that scar nicely. Not now, though— give it a few more months to heal up so they can work with the scar tissue but you don’t have to look at that.”

“Thanks for the tip,” Jeff said.

Whenever he heard about churches or groups destroying his merchandise or deleting his songs, that scar reminded him why. Hate was a disease some spread out of fear. Jeff wasn’t going to hide out or live in fear.

His career, however, had been ripped to shreds.

“Need anything for pain?” the doc asked.

“No. I’m good,” Jeff replied.

“Sleeping okay? I can give you something for that,” the doc offered.

“I’ll live. I don’t need meds.” Jeff reached for his boots.

The doc smiled. “Okay then. Any memory of the attack?”

Jeff shrugged. “Some odd dreams. No faces or details.”

“Could be your memory coming back or just fears. Some Xanax could reduce your anxiety. You’d sleep better,” the doc suggested.

“It’s a jumble. Three or four guys beating me. Then it all blurred. I saw my family. My ex. I don’t have any headaches anymore. My vision is fine. So, it’s just a jumbled memory, if a memory at all.” Jeff tried not to think about it too much.

“Well, you’re in good general health. Hope you’re taking a multi-vitamin. That can’t hurt. And my office will call you in about a year for an annual physical.” The doc made a note on his tablet.

“Why?” Jeff asked.

“It’s my practice. Especially once you’ve hit forty. High blood pressure can sneak up on you, among other things. Just good preventative health. If you’ve moved back south, just let us know. Good luck.” The doc shook Jeff’s hand and left the room.

Jeff arrived back at the compound to a flurry of activity.

“Aunt Ida,” Bambi explained as she clipped up her hair.

“Great.” Jeff wanted to turn around and drive into the Pacific Ocean.

Every family had a crazy aunt who looked down on everyone else. Mom’s Aunt Ida was the one in their family. She’d married a pastor of some church and moved to Mississippi with him when Mom was young, but every few years she’s swoop in for a visit and to judge things while pretending she wasn’t.
